Several new species of flies and midges (Diptera) were recorded during a week-long international course on fly identification in Sandur. The course was organised by ForBio (Norwegian Research School in Biosystematics), STI (Swedish Taxonomy Initiative) and Tjóðsavnið.

Researchers at Tjóðsavnið have conducted a study on water beetles and water boatmen in Faroese ponds. They conclude that the distribution of water beetles and water boatmen in the Faroes is explained by habitat characteristics, specifically size and depth of the pond.

Several individuals of the celery fly Euleia heraclei (Tephritidae) were observed in June 2022. The flies were found on Angelica archangelica in the middle of Tórshavn. This is the first record of the species in the Faroes, and also might be the country’s first record of the fly family Tephritidae in the wild.

For the biologists working on the Biodiversity Project on Koltur, the summers are filled with exciting fieldwork on the island. But the majority of the work is actually done during the long dark winter months.

The Faroe Islands National Museum has received funding to conduct a three-year research project on diversity of plants, birds, and invertebrates on the island of Koltur. The grant of 2 mio. DKK is from the Danish Aage V. Jensens Fonde.

Four biologists from Tjóðsavnið participated at the Annual Meeting of the Icelandic Ecological Society (Vistfræðifélag Íslands) 16th - 17th april 2021. Due to Corona, the conference took place online via Zoom.

A new species of dung beetle has been recorded for the first time since 1916. There are now four dung beetle species recorded for the Faroe Islands.
